October is National Fire Prevention Month across the country. Here in Memphis, the Fire Museum of Memphis is hosting a Fire Prevention Exhibit around this year’s theme of “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen”. Unattended cooking is the #1 cause of fires in the home.

You can bring your children into the museum so they can learn Fire Prevention and Safety from our Fire Education Experts. Patricia Belt and the Memphis Fire Dogs will be hosting an exhibit Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to talk with kids about what is and isn’t safe in the kitchen. The Memphis Fire Dogs will be available to teach kids lots of Fire Safety lessons including Stop, Drop, and Roll.

The entire museum has a theme of Fire Prevention and Safety. We have the FedEx Fire Room where visitors can get a first-hand account of what a house fire is like, without being in danger. They can view the Fire Safety House to see what types of fire hazards are in a home. They can even drive a virtual reality fire truck to a fire. These are fun ways for kids to learn a very serious lesson about fire safety and prevention.

Fire Prevention Week is October 4 – 10 and is the perfect time to talk with your family about fire safety. It’s also a great time to install smoke detectors in your home. Three out of every 5 home fire deaths are in homes without working smoke detectors.
